The Newlands were built around 1902 by Hamstead Colliery manager,Isaac Meacham who was aged arount 70 in anticipation of his retirement he had a row of eight houses built where he, his wife's sister, and two of his sons occupied four of the houses.

Three years later in 1905 Isaac Meacham died and was buried at St Johns Church, Church Lane, Perry Village.

A couple of hundred yards north of James Road where the Hamstead Junior and Infants school lies is the crossroads of Hamstead Road, Stanton Road, and Tanhouse Avenue.

This part of the Hamstead Road, was once known as Spouthouse lane.
